Bowdon Griffins lost to Bury Peelers 2-3 in the NWF 26 pt Handicap League on Sunday 9th Aug.

Bowdon played Bowdon again but this time in the NWF Short league. Bowdon Weekdayers were captained by Nigel Matthews and his team comprised Charles Harding, Ken Cooper and Mike Blackburn.

Bowdon Weekenders were captained by Cas Sinclair and her team comprised Louise Cheyne, Andrew Jenkins and Philip Thompson.

Weekdayers got off to a good start, winning 2 of the 4 games (one of the games was drawn due to a bit of a mix up) and by lunch had increased their lead by 5 games to 2.

After lunch the Weekdayers won a further 5 games to take the match 10 to 5, with 1 game drawn. Well done Bowdon!

Bowdon team travelled to the supper fast Chester lawns to take part on the NWF One Ball league. Bowdon team was: Andrew Jenkins (12), Philip Thompson (12) and Garth Aspinall – Captain (20). Chester team was Robin Tasker (4.50, Rick Davies (5) and Doreen Curtis (20).

The day comprised of of 18 matches, everyone playing each other twice. by lunch time Bowdon were 5 – 4 ahead, but after lunch games were reversed with Chester winning 5 and Bowdon 4, ending in a 9 – 9 draw.

As Captain Garth says “A tightly fought contest- pleased that we were not fazed by their dry, bumpy, sloping lawns. A good day – perfect weather and they  looked after us well. Loved the chocolate cake😊”

The Earls travelled to Fylde to take part in the NWF 14pt league match. The Team was Captain: Charles Fraser, David Beddy, Mike Dale and Carol Steinberg. The Fylde team was Barry Broughton, Alison Broughton, Robert Bentwood and Philip Bass.

In a typical Blackpool day of intermittent heavy showers , strong winds and sunshine, the Bowdon Earls 14 point AC team were welcomed with warm hospitality, and then beaten by six games to four  by a strong Fylde team. 

The match started well, with Bowdon winning both the doubles games, but in the singles, Fylde put in a strong performance, winning six of the eight singles matches. 
Particular mentions go to Mike Dale and David Beddy who each won one of their singles matches.

The Weekenders hosted Bury in this NWF Short league. The team was:

Cas Sinclair (Captain) (4), Liz Webb (2), Lorna Frost (5) and Andrew Thomson (1). The Bury team was Richard Leach (2), Margaret Eccles (3), Phil Nuttall (3.5) and Vi Richards (6).

The day started well for Weekenders sharing the first 4 games 2 all with Bury. After morning coffee the next 4 games were shared also. 4 – 4 at lunch. The Weekenders were a little slower getting to the pace of the games after lunch and /Bury sneaked a lead, winning 3 of the next four games. Afternoon tea didn’t help the Weekenders much, losing three of the last round of games, Bury running out 10 – 6 winners. Well done Bury, commiserations to the Weekenders.

In a hard fought 14-point AC match at Bowdon, the Llanfairfechan 14-point AC team beat Bowdon Earls by six games to four. 

Honours were even in the 2 doubles matches, one game each, and when six of the eight singles games had finished, both teams were again equal at four games each. 

The second last game went to Llanfairfechan by a convincing margin, but the final game to finish was very close, with Llanfairfechan winning by a single hoop as time was called. 

Result: Lanfairfechan six, Bowdon four, in what was a friendly and enjoyable match.

The Bowdon team was David Beddy,  Ross Pimlott, Garth Aspinall and Charles Fraser.
The Llanfairfechan team was David Harding, Jane Turner, Fred Williams and Sarah Andrew

Captain Mike Flannery had passed the baton to Mike Shelmerdine (6) for this match in the 26 PT league. Mike takes with him to the ultra fast Chester lawns fellow team mates; Robert Cutts-Watson (10), Phil Thompson (18) and Andrew Jenkins (18). As Mike Shelmerdine noted the Chester lawns were a uniform Khaki!, extremely dry and fast. The Chester team was David Boyd (4), Robin Tasker (4.5), David Guyton (5) and Ant Fletcher (12).

It was a close match Chester winning by 4 games to 3, Philip losing out on golden hoop.

The inaugural short tournament for the Barbara Young Memorial Trophy will be held at Whitehead Park, Bury on Saturday 1st Aug.

Bowdon Weekdayers travelled to Bury on Saturday 18th July in NWF Short League.
The team was captained by Brian Storey (3P), Ken Cooper (3P), Robert Cutts-Watson (3.5) and Carol Steinberg (8). The Bury team was: Richard Leach (2), Chris Alvey (2), Anne Alvey (3) and Duncan Meachin (7).

The morning session saw Bury take an early lead; 3 games to 1. A cup of tea later saw Bowdon share the next set of games 2 all. After lunch Bowdon won the afternoon sessions 5 to 3 to tie the match 8 – 8.

Bowdon were at home to Chester Chariots in the NWF Level Play GC league on Wednesday 15th July. The team was Nigel Matthews (-1), Angharrad Walters (-3) and Sandra Cornes (3). The Chariots were represented by Mark Lloyd (1), Garry Greenwood (1) and Sarah Clements(2).

Bodon got off to a cracking start winning 7 of the first 9 games. After lunch there was more of the same with Bowdon winning 6 of the remaining 9 games, a 13 – 5 victory. Well done.
