The Earls travelled to play Bury in the NWF 14pt League. Captain Charles Fraser’s team was: Charles Fraser (7.5), Ros Pimlott (7.5), Andrew Jenkins (8.5) and Phil Thompson (12). Bury’s team was Tony Phillips (2), Roger Schofield (4), Richard Leach (4.5) and Margaret Eccles (5.5)
Captain Fraser sends the following match report:
“Facing a strong, low-handicap Bury 14-point team, rain, and very slow, heavy lawns, the Bowdon team had a poor start to the match on Wednesday 26 August. On the wet lawns, almost every shot seemed to stop well short of the target.
Bury took an early lead and held onto it till lunchtime, winning all the morning’s matches. As the lawns dried out, the Bowdon team played better, running more hoops, but the strong Bury team held onto their advantage, winning very convincingly, nine games to one.
Particular mentions go to Ros Pimlott who secured the single Bowdon victory of the day, to Andrew Jenkins who only lost his morning match by a single point, and to Philip Thompson who put in a fine show, and only just lost the final match of the day on Golden Hoop.
Also on the positive side, the forecast thunder and lightning failed to materialise, much to everyone’s relief.
