Bowdon beat Chester 3-2 in the Mary Rose CE Inter-Club match, 28th May

Bowdon obtained a great, but narrow, win, 3 -2, away at Chester in this Croquet England national competition known as the Mary Rose on Tuesday 28th May (rearranged from 23rd May owing to flooded lawns). This is a knock-out competition with handicap restrictions. All players must with handicaps of 0 and above, and the aggregate team handicap must be 4 or above. Bowdon will next have to play against Bury, who beat Tyneside 5-1.

Our team, with handicaps, was as follows:

Chester’s team, with handicaps, was Mark Lloyd 0.5, Robin tasker 4.5 and David Boyd 5. Thus Bowdon’s aggregate handicap was 8 and Chester’s was 10. This would have made Bowdon the favourites, but on Chester’s lawns local familiarity counts for a great deal so the match would have been predicted as a close call. So it proved.

Bowdon won the morning doubles with Michael Sandler and Andrew Tomson beating Robin Tasker and David Boyd 17 – 13. Adrian Apps faced Chester’s best player Mark Lloyd (for some years a popular Bowdon member) and lost 16 – 26.

In the afternoon Adrian beat Robin 21 – 11, Andrew beat David 26 – 9 and Michael lost in a close game against Mark 21 – 26.

Well done team, and good luck for the next round against Bury.
